The Beaches of Bombinhas

Bombinhas is the capital of the ecological world and is home to a great variety of wildlife and forestry, beautiful islands and beaches with stunning waterfalls that contrast with the bold green of the Atlantic Rainforest. Here it is possible to visit popular, centrally located beaches as well as deserted, paradise-like beaches that are still untouched by man.

Bombas Beach – With its crystal clear water and white sandy beaches, Bombas is a perfect spot to swim or sunbathe. Bombas has lots of options: bars, restaurants, and inns. Along Bombas Beach you will see traditional fishing boats used in the annual “tainha (mullet)” fishing season (May) .This is the longest, most open beach in the city with an extension of 2 km.

Mariscal Beach – Considered one of the best beaches in the region for surfing, this beach has ecologically preserved natural vegetation throughout most of its extension. Mariscal has lots of fine a white sand and this beach is widest in the area, thus providing lots of room for its visitors.

Bombinhas Beach – This is the busiest beach in the city and has a complete infrastructure of hotels, inns, camp grounds, diversified shops, tourist services and diving schools and shops. This is a great beach for swimming (especially for children) and aquatic activities in general. Diving excursions to Arvoredo Island leave from Bombinhas. (These excursions also start at Lagoinha and Embrulho Beaches.)

Galheta Beach – Perfect for nature lovers, this is one of the most isolated beaches in Bombinhas, accessible by a one hour trail hike. It can be seen from Bombas Beach and is part of the Municipal Park of Galheta. This beach has a variety of rocks and shells and is considered to be the most rustic beach in the region.

Retiro dos Padres Beach – Ideal for sport fishing and independent diving, this beach has lots of trails surrounded by the Atlantic Rainforest. This was home to a retreat for Salesian Priests of the Catholic Church in the 1906’s. Currently the retreat is a seaside camp ground, open to the public, where you can see unbelievably beautiful sunrises.

Lagoinha Beach – This is a calm and tranquil beach for swimming and snorkeling. There is a natural pool formed between boulders in the shallow water providing the perfect spot for people of all ages to enjoy. This beach, which is only 70 meters long, is a true retreat for those wishing to escape from the city for some down time.

Ribeiro Beach – This beach is nearly deserted and untouched by man. This is a calm beach for sun bathing, diving and snorkeling. With access by trail from Bombinhas, by the seacoast or Bombas, Ribeiro Beach is surrounded by vegetation and the water here is perfect for a refreshing swim.

Atalaia Beach or Mariscal Beach – This beach is perfect for all types of aquatic activities. It is 240 meters long and has a camp ground and inn. This is the perfect place for those wishing to cam p as well as take part in nautical sports.

Sepultura (“Grave”) Beach – This beach is one of the “postcards” of the city. Surrounded by greenery, it has transparent water and fine white sand and is simply gorgeous. The name “Grave” is a result of a fight between two slaves, being that one of them was killed and buried at this beach. Sepultura Beach is ideal for diving and fishing and has great trails for walking/hiking.

Quatro Ilhas (Four Islands)Beach – Internationally famous because from this beach it is possible to see four beautiful islands: Avoredo, Deserta, Gales and Macuco; therefore the name “Four Islands” Beach. On the right side of this beach the sand is white and the water is great for surfing. On the left side of the beach the water is calm; a perfect swimming spot. This beach is 1 km long.

Conceiçao Beach – This beach is perfect for children due to its calm, transparent and soothing water. There is natural pool which forms between the boulders in shallow waters. This beach is 450m long and is a perfect place to spend the day with the family. Conceiçao also has diving and snorkeling options.

Canto Grande Beach – This is a beach with crystal clear water. A big wide beach with white sand and lots of quartz and crystal. This is the longest beach in the city with two separate shorelines. Mar de Dentro (Inside Beach) is 1 km long, is protected by the peninsula and is calm and peaceful. Mar de Fora (Outside Beach) which is 3 km long faces the wide open sea and is perfect for surfing. During the months of July and August this beach is a refuge for whales migrating from the Antarctic. This ecologically preserved beach is spotted with bars and restaurants which serve delicious appetizers accompanied by a beautiful vista of the open ocean.

Lagoa Beach – This deserted beach belongs to the Zimbros coastline. An ecologically preserved beach with access by trail or boat, this is a great area for diving.

Zimbros Beach – A beach with tranquil water, safe for children and perfect for nautical activities such as windsurfing, jet skis and boating. It name originates from a plant with sweet smelling fruit found by the original Açorian colonizers. Zimbros Beach is a village of fishermen and their colorful, unique boats decorate the seascape along their beach.

Cardoso Beach – This is a paradise-like, fascinating, deserted beach. Cardoso is only 130 meters long and its transparent and calm water make it a perfectly peaceful beach.

Triste Beach – A good hike followed by a refreshing shower under the waterfall while enjoying the gorgeous scenery is what´s in store for you at Triste Beach. This beach is surrounded by hills and rocks and is accessible by trail or boat.

Red Beach – This is a deserted beach with reddish sand and is accessible only by trail. It is ideal for nature lovers. To get here you need to hike through Cardoso, Lagoa and Triste Beaches. The hike takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes on a marked trail and there´s a restaurant at the beach.
